Introduction to SEND at Cambois

At Cambois Primary School we are committed to ensuring that all children are supported to enable them to make good progress in all areas of their development.

At Cambois we believe that in order to effectively support children who may have additional needs it is vital to have early identification / assessment and high quality provision.

Mrs Allan is our Special Educational Needs and Disability Co-ordinator (SENDCO) - if parents have any concerns about Special Educational Needs they are encouraged to contact her.

If any parent has a concern or would like to make a complaint about SEND please do so by contacting the Head teacher or Deputy Headteacher.

WHAT IS SEND?

For children of compulsory school age, they have a special educational need/learning difficulty or disability if they:

  1. have a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age; or
  2. have a disability which prevents or hinders them from making use of educational facilities of a kind generally provided for others of the same age in mainstream schools

A child under compulsory school age has special educational needs if they fall within the definitions above or would do if special educational provision was not made for them.

Children with special educational needs or disabilities may need extra help or support, or special provision made for them to allow them to have the same opportunities as others of the same age. If a child or young person has special educational needs or disabilities their needs will fall into one or more of the following four areas:

1. Communication and interaction
2. Cognition and learning
3. Emotional, social and mental health
4. Physical and/or sensory

How do we assess and support SEND at Cambois?
Mrs Allan is our SENDCO and we have robust systems for identifying and supporting pupils with additional needs.
As an inclusive school we must ensure all aspects of 'reasonable adjustments' are considered.
The process of SEND is:

STEP 1
- Identification of need by staff and parents What are your concerns? SENCO  observes the child, SENCO will speak to parents, have the reasonable adjustments and interventions not had the desired impact?

STEP 2
Pupil passport - completed by the class teacher with the parents  and in conjunction with the child. Targets on these are updated/ reviewed  every term and should be SMART. Reviewed with parents.

STEP 3 - SEND support plan
Where a child's needs are greater and parents and school are concerned about limited progress and potential to need EHCP the SENCO will set up the original SEND support plan in a meeting with the child and parent. Every term the target section of this plan will be reviewed and new targets set. These will be SMART.

STEP 4 - two cycles of SEND support and parents and staff are still concerned the SENCO will make an application for a COSA/ EHCP to the local authority.

EHCP reviews - 6 monthly for EYFS and annually for year 1-6.
