Year 3 and 4

Autumn 1 2025

Class information

Year 3 / 4 is the lower key stage 2 class at Cambois Primary School. We are taught by Miss Mason and supported by Mrs Palmer, Miss McBriarty, Mrs Gooch and Mr L Allan.

In the mornings, we have a phonics and alternate guided reading/spelling lessons followed by maths and literacy each day. We follow a creative curriculum in the afternoons, including Art, Music, Computing, Science, French and PSHE.

Maths

This half term, children will be consolidating their knowledge of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, as well as moving onto learning the 3s. The main focus will be place value, problem solving and money in the real world.

Year 4s will be practicing all of their tables in preparation for the statutory tests towards the end of the academic year.

Literacy

In autumn 1, we will be looking at the story of Beowulf, concentrating on skills and sentence based writing of character descriptions. Children will go further to create their own mythological creatures.

Oracy Skills within Literacy

In our class we have been working on building our oracy skills, engaging in a range of Literacy strategies such as hot seating, role playing, drama and reasoning to develop and support our writing.

P.E

Our P.E days in Year 3 and 4 are Tuesday and Friday. Please make sure your child arrives at school in the correct P.E kit. Children are currently learning gymnastics with our instructor Sophie.

Science - Animals including humans

  • Identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food; they get nutrition from what they eat.

  • identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.

Art
This project teaches children about colour theory by studying the colour wheel and colour mixing. It includes an exploration of tertiary colours, warm and cool colours, complementary colours and analogous colours, and how artists use colour in their artwork.

DT

This project teaches children about food decay and preservation. They discover key inventions in food preservation and packaging, then make examples. The children prepare, package and evaluate a healthy snack.

This essential skills and knowledge project teaches children about compass points and four and six-figure grid references. They learn about the tropics and the countries, climates and culture of North and South America. Children identify physical features in the United Kingdom and learn about the National Rail and canal networks. They conduct an enquiry to prove a hypothesis, gathering data from maps and surveys before drawing conclusions.

MFL - French

In French, we will be leaning phonics and all about animals.

Computing

In computing this half term, we are focusing on e-mails and other forms of communication using our Purple Mash scheme of work. We don't just use this in computing: our teaching staff set cross-curricular games and quizzes to make learning fun and we get to tinker with our skills, which we love to do. We continue to use our Ipads for TTRS and Bedrock too!
